Hey Comrades! Welcome to our guide on the proposed changes to the Work Capability Assessment (WCA). What is it? What is the consultation? And, How can you help?

What is the Work Capability Assessment (WCA)?
If you claim Universal Credit (UC) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Work Capability Assessments (WCA) are how the DWP decides if you are 'fit for work'.
The WCA is used to put you into either:
1. UC Limited Capability for Work-Related Activity (LCWRA)/ESA Support Group; or
2. UC Limited Capability for Work (LCW)/ESA Work-Related Activity group
What is the consultation?
It is important to remember that no changes have yet been made to the WCA. That is why getting involved with the consultation is so important.
The consultation is looking to change (or completely remove) the criteria descriptors/points for these activities:
1. Mobilising
2. Absence or loss of bowel/bladder control (Continence)
3. Coping with Social Engagement
4. Being able to leave the house
It is also deciding whether to alter or remove the Substantial Risk rule. This rule currently takes into consideration that work may be a substantial risk to claimants.
